Preview and Prediction

Martin Necas has carried the weight of the Carolina Hurricanes on his shoulders this season.

The skilled center brings a 13-game scoring streak into Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Necas has recorded 10 goals and 17 assists during his impressive streak, and he currently leads the team in both goals (11) and assists (19) in 17 games this season. In fact, he has nearly double the points (30) of his closest teammate, Andrei Svechnikov (16).

Most recently, the Czech Republic native tallied two goals and two assists in Sunday's 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues. It was his first multi-goal game of the season, and he played a key role in the Hurricanes' 11th win in their last 13 games.

"When things are going your way, you're in the zone," Necas said. "That's how I feel right now. I'm trying to stay in that zone for as long as possible. We've talked about confidence and I'm trying to bring that every night. But it's not just about one player, it's a team effort. We've been dominating teams at even strength and that's been crucial for our success."

Eric Robinson also had a strong performance for the Hurricanes, contributing a goal and two assists, while Svechnikov also found the back of the net in a game where Carolina was able to comfortably secure the win despite not playing their best.

"We may not always have our A-game," Robinson said, "but in this league, you have to find ways to win."

Philadelphia also struggled in their last game, a 3-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday. The Flyers fell behind 3-0 before scoring two late goals in the third period to make the game interesting.

"We shot ourselves in the foot a bit," said Owen Tippett, who scored one of the Flyers' two goals. "They're a quick team and they transition fast. We gave them too many opportunities and ended up behind because of it."

Veteran coach John Tortorella was more blunt in his assessment.

"I liked a lot of our game as we went on," Tortorella said, "but (expletive), we do some stupid things. It's so frustrating to see the mistakes we make that should be eliminated from our game. That's what frustrates me the most."

Wednesday's game marks the third of a five-game homestand for Philadelphia, who had been on a 4-0-1 streak in their previous five games before Monday's loss.

"We put ourselves in a position to win the game and that's all we can ask for," said Flyers forward Travis Konecny. "It didn't go the way we wanted in the first half of the game, but we stuck with it. We've been doing the right things and starting to see results. Unfortunately, we didn't get the result we wanted on Monday."

Philadelphia's recent 4-0-1 streak began after a 6-4 loss to Carolina on November 5th. Necas was a standout player in that game as well, scoring the game-winning goal with just 31 seconds left on the clock.

"It's still early in the season, but I really like our team," said Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour. "We have a lot of guys who understand how the game needs to be played on a daily basis. The new players we brought in have bought into our system and that's why we're in the position we're in right now."

In an uneventful first period, the Flyers outshot the Hurricanes 11-2. Lindblom and Isaac Ratcliffe had solid scoring chances in the final two minutes. Andersen turned away all 11 Flyers shots.

The Hurricanes went ahead 1-0 just 24 seconds into the second when a bouncing puck landed over Travis Sanheim's stick and Niederreiter capitalized in front.

Mayhew equalized for the Flyers 35 seconds later for his third goal in the last two games.

The Hurricanes regained the lead 2-1 at 12:13 when Teravainen received a pass in front and redirected the puck off Philadelphia's Nick Seeler and into the net.
